I was diagnosed in July 2018, at age 14, with a rare form of soft tissue cancer called myxiod liposarcoma. I had an initial surgery at Carilion Hospital in Roanoke and a follow up surgery at Johns Hopkins Children's Hospital in Baltimore to remove a mailignant tumor from my left leg. Soft tissue sarcomas (cancer that affects connective tissue such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, and the lining of blood vessels) can occur in any soft tissue in the body so I receive frequent scans including detailed MRI's of my leg and full body and CT's of my chest, abdomen and pelvis. I am hosting this tournament to raise awareness in our community about pediatric soft tissue sarcomas and give back to the amazing medical community that has helped me remain cancer free throughout the past year. I will donate the money raised from this event to Carilion Pediatric Oncology and Johns Hopkins Pediatric Oncology for soft tissue sarcoma education and research.
Spike Sarcoma is a one day volleyball tournament fundraiser open to the following leagues: Adult Co-ed, High School Co-ed, Girl's 18U, 17U, 16U, 15U, 14U. High School and middle school teams must play in the division of their oldest player. This is an unsanctioned, charity event, so anyone is welcome to form a team as long as they follow the age division guidelines. Age groups may be combined by organizer to maximize court scheduling. Teams are responsible for score keeping and reffing and must provide or rent ($10) their own volleyballs for warm up's.
The cost is $200 per team, 100% of the proceeds will benefit pediatric sarcoma research. We can host up to 24 teams with a 3 game guarantee. Awards will be given to the winning team in each division.
Schedules and specifics will be emailed to team coaches by 5 pm on Nov. 20th. Register your team and play
for fun and a great cause. There is no gate fee but spectator donations are appreciated!
